RC Vertical Test Bed
A New Design
For years I have been trying to come up with a way to use all propulsion systems on an electric ducted fan (EDF) powered VTOL aircraft in all phases of flight. A design came to mind where 3 nacelles would be able to rotate independently. The front 2 nacelles would sit on either side of the fuselage in front of the wing, and the rear nacelle would sit inside the fuselage. The differential rotation of the front 2 nacelles would provide yaw control, and a simple S duct would provide air to the center duct during forward flight.
A simple proof-of-concept test bed was created using carbon fiber tubes, 3d printed parts, and electronics I had lying around from old projects. An Arduino based Teensy board ran DrehmFlight flight control software, and tests proved successful.
